More Info on Chase Park

Description

Chase Park, located in Ravenswood near Uptown, spans 4.88 acres and serves as a lively gathering place for families, youth, and adults. Children enjoy after-school programs, summer swim time in the outdoor pool, and growing Saturday sports like soccer, bitty basketball, and t-ball. Adults stay active with basketball leagues, volleyball, softball, step aerobics, and fitness classes, while parents with preschoolers connect through "Moms, Pops, and Tots" and playgroups.

The park is home to a 1/5-mile rubberized running track, two baseball fields, a football/soccer field, four tennis courts, and a spacious, newly renovated 7,481 sq. ft. playground featuring swings, age-specific play areas, and accessible soft surfacing for safe play.

History

Chase Park began in 1920 when the Lincoln Park Commission converted the former Gunther Park baseball field into a public park. Over the next several years, land was acquired and amenities like tennis courts, a playground, and a fieldhouse were added. The original fieldhouse was replaced with a new building in 1976.

The park honors Salmon P. Chase (1803–1873), Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln and later Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A noted anti-slavery advocate, Chase appointed John Rock, the first African-American attorney to argue before the Court.
